How cyberpunk names are built
Cyberpunk cities are crowded, multilingual and owned by a handful of companies, and the names show it. A single character might have a Nigerian surname, a Japanese given name and a street alias picked up in a Slavic-speaking district. Mira Okafor and Kaito Volkov sound right because they sound like nobody in particular. Keep the mix of origins and you have already done half of the genre.
Most characters end up with two names in use. The birth or corporate name is on a badge, a contract and a debt record. The alias is what friends call them, and it is short: one or two syllables, a hard consonant, often an object or a mood (Static, Rook, Vex, Halo). The alias is chosen partly to be searched badly. A name like Zero or Ghost is deliberately hard to trace.
Corporate names go the other way. Executives tend to have clean, tidy names with a title attached, because in that world a title is a security clearance. If you want a corporate antagonist to feel cold, give them a name with no nickname at all.
Netrunner and hacker handles
Handles for people who live online follow internet habits, not the street. They are lowercase, run two words together or join them with an underscore, and often carry a number tacked on by a system that wanted a free username. ghostwire, null_sector and echoloop42 read as real accounts, which is the point.
Pick words that suggest emptiness or transmission (null, signal, relay, static) and pair them with something physical (fox, ward, spike). The result sounds technical without leaning on a single hacking cliche.
20 cyberpunk names worth borrowing
- Mira "Static" OkaforOrdinary birth name plus a one-word alias: readers learn there are two versions of this person.
- Kaito "Rook" NakamuraA chess piece used as a callsign says the character holds a position and does not move.
- VexThree letters, a hard x, and it fits on any wall tag or comm channel.
- HaloSoft against a hard setting, which suggests either irony or a past with a church.
- Ingrid "Coil" LindqvistNordic surname keeps the cast international, while Coil hints at wiring or a spring about to release.
- Director Anya NovakA corporate title used as a first word reads as authority, and nobody would dare shorten it.
- Executive Malik HaddadClean, professional and unmemorable on purpose; his power comes from paperwork, not personality.
- Deputy Director Priya DasguptaThe long title is the intimidation: it tells you how many people report upward before her.
- Renata SilvaNo alias and no title. In this genre that can mean a person with nothing to hide, or the best-hidden one.
- ghostwireTwo words fused, all lowercase: it looks like an account name and it sounds like a threat.
- null_sectorThe underscore is doing the work here, turning a phrase into something typed by someone in a hurry.
- echoloop42A trailing number suggests the shorter names were taken, a small, believable detail.
- coldrelayCold plus a piece of network gear gives an operator who moves data and asks no questions.
- Soren "Lazarus" WeissA name that promises the character has been written off at least once.
- Jules "Fable" MoreauSoft, story-ish alias for a fixer who trades in rumors and reputations.
- Talia "Shard" MendezShard suggests broken glass or a chip fragment; either way, something small and sharp.
- Noa "Moth" ChoMoth is drawn to light, which makes it an unexpected alias for a night-city scavenger.
- Managing Partner Idris MbekiPartners at a firm own it, so the title tells you this person is the boardroom, not the staff.
- silentbloomContradictory words make a handle you remember; the quiet suggests a data thief, not a brawler.
- Viktor "Solder" VargaNamed for the workshop craft, a good tag for a ripperdoc-style mechanic who fixes anything with a wire.
Naming a cyberpunk character
- Mix the origins of first names and surnames deliberately. A city where everyone shares one heritage does not feel like the genre.
- Give street characters a one-word alias and corporate characters a plain name. Reversing the pattern makes a good twist, but only do it when you mean to.
- Choose aliases that are hard to search. Common nouns (Ghost, Zero, Static) are what a person on the run would pick.
- For hacker handles, stay lowercase and let a number or underscore appear only where a real signup form would have demanded it.
- Read the alias aloud in a shouted sentence. If a fixer cannot bark it across a loud bar in one syllable or two, shorten it.
Questions people ask
What are good cyberpunk names?
Good cyberpunk names pair an international birth name with a short street alias, such as Mira "Static" Okafor or Kaito "Rook" Nakamura. Aliases run one or two syllables, and hard consonants like k, x and z are common.
How do I make a cyberpunk name for myself?
Start with your first name or a neutral one, choose a one-word alias from an object or mood (Rook, Halo, Vex), and add a surname from any culture. Or drop the surname and use a lowercase handle like ghostwire.
What is a netrunner name?
A netrunner name is a hacker handle. It is usually lowercase, joins two words or uses an underscore, and may end in a number, like null_sector or echoloop42. It reads like a username rather than a person's name.
Are these names from existing cyberpunk games or books?
No. The lists are written for this site and avoid named characters from published cyberpunk fiction. Common words such as Ghost or Rook can appear in stories elsewhere, but no full character name is copied.
Can I generate cyberpunk names by letter?
Yes. Choose a first letter above the results. Netrunner handles start with the first letter of the handle, while titled corporate names ignore the title and sort by the first name.
