How people pick french names

French names lean on accents and compounds. Accents (é, è, ç, ï) are part of the spelling and change how the name is said, so Chloé and Chloe are not the same on paper. Compound first names such as Jean-Pierre and Marie-Claire are written with a hyphen and count as a single name. The gender of the compound follows the first part, which is why Jean-Marie is a man and Anne-Marie a woman. French men can carry Marie as a second part without comment.

Surnames sit at the top of a short list. Martin, Bernard, Thomas, Petit, Robert, Richard, Durand and Dubois cover a large share of the country, and most are common words or old first names. Regions leave their mark: Le Gall and Le Goff are Breton, Meyer and Muller are Alsatian, and a de or du before a name marks a place, and often a noble line.

Rules have changed. Before 1993, French parents had to choose from an approved list of first names, which is why older generations share so many of them. Since the 1990s the choice is free, and the recent lists include Gabriel, Raphaël, Louise, Jade and Emma alongside the old classics. Since 2005 a child can also take the mother's surname, the father's or both.

Modern, classic and vintage French names

The modern style follows current birth lists, where short, soft-sounding names such as Léa, Lou, Léo and Jules are frequent. Classic covers people born from about 1950 to 1980, the generation of Nathalie, Sylvie, Philippe and Pascal, plus the Jean- and Marie- compounds. Vintage moves further back, to Marcel, Odette, Simone and Suzanne, names that returned in fiction more than in nurseries.

If your character was born in the 1930s, the vintage style suits a grandmother in a village. For an Alsatian or Breton family, look for the regional surnames the generator mixes in.

French names that work for either sex

Some French names are used for both boys and girls: Camille, Dominique, Claude, Alix and Lou. The neutral setting draws from these. Accent details still matter, since Camille is the same for both, but Andrée is female and André male. If you need to write a name by hand, check the ending before assuming.

Getting French names right

  • Keep the accents. Chloé, Raphaël, Étienne and Noël look wrong without them, and French readers spot the omission immediately.
  • Hyphenate compound first names (Jean-Pierre, Marie-Claire) and capitalize both parts. They are one name, and the gender follows the first part.
  • Choose a region for the surname: Le Gall for Brittany, Muller for Alsace, Martin or Bernard for anywhere.
  • Match the first name to a decade. Léa and Jules read as children, Nathalie and Philippe as parents, Odette and Marcel as grandparents.
  • Use de or du with care. In fiction it flags a noble family, so it should have a story reason.

Questions people ask

What are the most common French last names?

Martin, Bernard, Thomas, Petit, Robert, Richard, Durand, Dubois, Moreau and Laurent are among the most frequent. Most began as first names or descriptions. Regional families add names like Le Gall in Brittany and Muller in Alsace.

What are popular French first names?

Recent favorites include Louise, Emma, Jade and Léa for girls, and Gabriel, Raphaël, Léo and Jules for boys. Older generations carry Nathalie, Sylvie, Philippe and Pascal, and even older ones Marcel, Odette and Simone.

Why do French names have hyphens?

A hyphen joins the two parts of a compound first name such as Jean-Pierre or Anne-Sophie, marking them as one name. The gender is decided by the first part, so Jean-Marie is a man's name.

Can a man have Marie in his name?

Yes. Marie is used as the second part of male compounds, for example Jean-Marie, in Catholic families. The compound is still male, because the first component decides the gender.

What does de mean in a French surname?

De means of or from, and in a family name it usually marks a place, and often a noble line. It is part of the legal name. Many people with de names are not aristocrats, though the particle carries that association.

Do French names use accents?

Yes. Accents such as é, è, ç and ï are part of the correct spelling, and they change pronunciation. Chloé, Raphaël and Noël are written with them, and the generator keeps them.
