What a guild name has to say
A guild is a group with a shared trade or purpose, and its name has to say which. Historic craft guilds did this plainly: the Guild of Coopers, the Company of Merchant Adventurers. A fantasy guild borrows that structure and adds mood, so that The Silver Compact sounds like traders with a secret and The Hollow Hand sounds like something you would not ask about.
The last word carries the group's shape. Order suggests vows and rank. Company suggests a working band with a leader and a payroll. Circle and Conclave suggest scholars. Syndicate suggests crime. Compact and League suggest agreement between separate parties. Pick the word first, then choose an adjective and a symbol to match.
Guilds have different needs in a game than on a page. In an MMO, a guild name is printed above every member's head and must be short, easy to type and a little intimidating. In a tabletop campaign, it also has to be memorable enough that players will use it, so two words is often better than four.
Guild types and what suits them
Adventurer guilds are practical: names about oaths, roads and banners. Thieves' guilds use small objects, such as a hand, key or mask, plus a discreet word like Society. Merchant guilds go for scales, ledgers and caravans. Mage guilds use symbols such as ember, rune and sigil with words for schools. Craft guilds use the trade itself, which is the most historically accurate pattern.
Game guilds are their own case. The Game guild style pairs an animal or element with a military word, the way most raid guilds do, and keeps it short so it fits above a character's head.

Naming a guild
- Choose the last word for the group's structure: Order for vows, Company for work, Syndicate for crime, Circle for scholars.
- For a tabletop guild, keep names to two or three words. Players will shorten anything longer, and you will not control the nickname.
- For an MMO, check the character limit and avoid names that need punctuation. A name that fits above a head is worth more than a clever one.
- Give the guild a symbol that matches the name, such as a key or a lantern. The image doubles as a logo and a plot hook.
- Let one detail hint at a history: Broken, Hollow, Reborn. A name with a scar suggests a story the players will want to uncover.
Questions people ask
What are good guild names?
Good guild names pair an adjective and a symbol with a group word, such as The Silver Compact, The Hollow Hand or The Ember Conclave. The last word shows the group's shape, and the front shows its tone.
What are good MMO guild names?
MMO guild names are short and strong, such as Wolf Vanguard or Storm Wardens. Keep them to two words, avoid special characters and check the game's length limit, because the name shows above every member.
What is the difference between an order, a company and a guild?
A guild is any organized trade or interest group. An order suggests vows and ranks, a company suggests a working band with a leader, and a circle or conclave suggests scholars or magic users.
How do I name a thieves' guild?
Use a small object and a discreet group word: The Hollow Hand, The Whisper Society, Order of the Sable Key. Thieves' guilds avoid boastful names, so understated and slightly ominous works best.
Can I get guild names for a specific letter?
Yes. Use the first-letter control above the results, and the generator will only show letters it can produce for your current style. The word The at the start is ignored when sorting.
