How hebrew names work

Most Hebrew names are short sentences or single images. Daniel is God is my judge, Eitan is strong, Shira is song, Tal is dew. Many carry a form of God's name (-el or -yah/-yahu, as in Gavriel and Eliyahu) or a nature word from the Land of Israel, such as Oren (pine) or Ayala (doe). The meaning is usually the reason for choosing the name, and this page shows it beside each name.

Three layers exist, and this page has a style for each. Biblical names (Sarah, David, Miriam) come from Scripture. Modern Israeli names (Noa, Lior, Yuval) grew out of Hebrew's revival as a spoken language, drawn from nature and everyday words. And in religious life a Jew is called by a Hebrew name plus ben or bat and the father's name, as in Yosef ben Shimon, which is used for prayer, the Torah reading and the marriage contract.

Family names are newer than given names. Cohen and Levi mark descent from the priests and the tribe of Levi, and both follow the father. Many other Israeli surnames were chosen, or Hebraized, in the twentieth century, as David Ben-Gurion's was, which is why you will find compound forms with ben- and bar- alongside older Sephardic and Ashkenazi names.

Hebrew names for girls and boys

Girls' names lean toward flowers, light and song: Vered (rose), Ayala (doe), Shira (song), Liora (light to me). Boys' names lean toward strength and the outdoors: Eitan, Oren, Erez (cedar), Barak (lightning). Plenty of names are used for any gender, and the neutral setting draws on those: Tal, Gal, Noam, Ori and Shai.

Keep in mind the spelling problem. Hebrew letters can be rendered in several ways, so Chaim is also written Haim, and Yitzhak is Yitzchak or Isaac. Pick one spelling and stay with it.

The ben and bat style

In Jewish religious use, ben means son of and bat means daughter of. The form Miriam bat Menachem ve-Rachel adds the mother's name, which is used in prayers for healing. The generator gives both the plain form and the form with the mother's name, and leaves out the combinations of the patriarchs and matriarchs, which are taken by history.

Picking a Hebrew name

  • Choose your layer first: a biblical name for tradition, a modern Israeli name for daily use, or the ben and bat form for religious contexts.
  • Read the meaning aloud. Because most Hebrew names are words, you can and should check what yours says.
  • Family custom counts. Ashkenazi Jews traditionally name a child after a deceased relative, and Sephardic families often name after a living grandparent, so ask before you choose.
  • Standardize your transliteration. Chaim, Haim and Hayim are the same name, so use one form everywhere.
  • For a character, tie the name to a place or a trade: Oren and Erez feel rooted in the land, Cohen and Levi imply a lineage.
