There is no single Indian name format
India has more than twenty official languages, and name rules change with each. A Hindi name is usually a given name and a surname (Priya Sharma). A Tamil name often puts the father's initial or village first (K. Karthik), and a Telugu name puts the family name first. A Bengali name runs first name, middle name and surname (Rajat Kumar Ghosh). A Sikh name centers on Singh for men and Kaur for women. A Marathi name typically stacks first name, father's name and surname (Omkar Prakash Kulkarni).
That is why this generator has five styles instead of one. Each uses the given names and surname patterns of its own region and gives you the format people from there would recognize. A name that is right in one style looks wrong in another: Kulkarni next to a Punjabi given name, or a Singh added to a Bengali name, would signal that the writer guessed.
Given names are mostly Sanskrit-derived and carry plain meanings, so glosses are shown: Aditi (boundless), Vikram (valor), Nisha (night). Surnames often point to a village, a trade or a clan, such as the Marathi -kar endings or Sikh clan names like Sandhu and Gill, and they should be used with the region they come from.
Indian names by region
Hindi names come from the north and center and lean heavily on Sanskrit words (Aarav, Ananya, Kavya, Vikram). Tamil names draw on Tamil and Sanskrit alike, and often end a woman's name in a long, flowing vowel (Meenakshi, Thenmozhi). Bengali names favor soft consonants and give men a middle name such as Kumar or Chandra. Marathi names are usually direct, short and rooted in Maharashtra's own families.
Punjabi names appear in two forms here. Sikh names use a spiritual first name and Singh or Kaur, and many first names such as Harpreet or Jaspreet are used for both men and women, so the neutral option pairs them with a Punjabi clan name and leaves out Singh and Kaur.
Indian names for girls and boys
Girls' names often name a flower, a light or a virtue: Kamala (lotus), Jyoti (light), Deepa (lamp), Vidya (knowledge). Boys' names often name a quality or the sun: Ravi, Aditya, Vikram, Harsh. Newer families often prefer short names with two syllables, such as Aarav, Diya and Kiran, that sound the same in English and in the home language.

Choosing an Indian name that fits
- Pick the region before the name. A Bengali surname on a Tamil given name will strike Indian readers as wrong right away.
- Use the format of the region: initials first for Tamil, father's name in the middle for Marathi, Singh or Kaur for Sikh names.
- Check the meaning. Most given names are Sanskrit words, so they have a clear sense, and the gloss in the list is the plain one.
- For characters, add a nickname. Indian families often shorten long names at home, such as Vikram to Vicky or Meenakshi to Meenu, and it adds realism.
- Avoid famous full names. A familiar first name with a surname everyone knows will read as a reference, not a character.
