What an OC name has to do
An OC, short for original character, is a character you made for a story that already has a world: a fandom, a roleplay server, a comic, a shared setting. That changes the naming job. Your character walks into a cast of famous names and has to sound as if they belong there without sounding like a knockoff. A name that shares two letters with a canon hero reads as a clone, so start by ruling those out.
The best OC names match the setting's habits and then break one of them a little. In a modern high school story, a plain first name with a slightly unusual surname does it. In a fantasy setting, keep the sound rules of the canon (short, soft, Latin-ish) but pick a place-like surname the canon never used. In an anime style story, the family name carries the personality, and the given name is the one your readers will type most.
People also forget that an OC name gets typed thousands of times in tags, captions and dialogue. Three syllables is comfortable. Apostrophes and unusual capitalization become annoying by chapter two.
OC names by fandom style
The style chips above follow the four settings people ask for most often. Modern gives everyday first names with real surnames. Fantasy uses old-sounding first names with a landscape surname or an "of" place. Anime gives Japanese names in the order English fanfiction usually prints them, given name first and family name second, so swap them if your story keeps the native order. Sci-fi leans on short, invented-sounding names and the occasional serial suffix.
If you are writing for an existing franchise, use the generator to find a first name and then check it against the canon cast. Fans notice when a new character shares a name with a minor one.

Picking a name your OC can keep
- Search the fandom's character list before you commit. If the first name is already used by a major character, change it.
- Choose a name you can type quickly. If you keep needing to check the spelling, readers will too.
- Decide the surname first if the character has a family story. The family name usually carries the backstory, and the first name can be casual.
- Let the name hint at the palette you plan to draw. Ash, Ember and Hollow read dark, while Linden and Hikari read light.
- Keep a neutral fallback ready. A name that works for any gender survives if you later rewrite the character.
Questions people ask
What does OC stand for?
OC stands for original character: a character you create yourself for a story, roleplay or artwork set in an existing world or fandom. An OC name should fit the setting while staying different from any canon character.
How do I choose a good OC name?
Match the setting's sound, then change one element. Take a first name in the right style, pair it with an unusual surname, and check the fandom's cast so your OC does not echo a canon character.
What are good anime OC names?
Pick a Japanese given name with clear pronunciation, such as Haruka, Ren or Akari, and a common family name like Mori or Hoshino. Short given names (two or three syllables) are easiest for readers.
Do OC names need a last name?
No. Many OCs go by one name, especially in fantasy and sci-fi settings, and it makes them easier to tag. Add a surname when family, house or heritage matters to the story.
