Naming a pet when you have not chosen the species yet

Most people who search for pet names already have an animal in the house, or one arriving on Saturday, and they want something better than the first three ideas on the fridge door. This generator is built for that case. The names work on a spaniel, a rabbit, a bearded dragon or a guinea pig, because none of them depend on the animal being any one shape.

The difference between species is mostly practical. A dog needs a name it can hear across a field, so short and open wins. A cat will not come when called and does not care, so almost anything works. Small animals like hamsters and rabbits tend to get affectionate, round-sounding names (Pudding, Button, Pip) simply because they are small and round. Birds copy sounds, so a name with hard consonants such as Kiwi or Pico is more likely to be echoed back.

The mistake that most owners regret is choosing a name that only suits the animal at one age. Pip is delightful on a kitten and awkward on a large adult cat, though people rarely mind. If it matters to you, look for names that can be shortened or lengthened: Beatrice becomes Bea, Barnaby becomes Barn or Barney.

Five kinds of pet names

Cute names lean on soft sounds and diminutives, the kind you can say in a baby voice without embarrassment. Funny names take a title such as Captain or Duchess and put it in front of something ridiculous, which is a reliable joke because the animal is always completely unaware. Classic names are the ones vets have heard forty times this month, and there is comfort in that. Nature names borrow plants, weather and landscape, and they work equally well on a fluffy and a scaly pet. Fancy names go the other way, giving a hamster the name of a duke.

You can use the girl, boy and either buttons to narrow the list. For animals whose sex is uncertain, such as a young rabbit or a bird you have not had tested, the either option is safe.

If you know the species

There are dedicated pages for dog names, cat names, rabbit names, hamster names, bird names, fish names and chicken names, each built around what that particular animal is like to live with. This page is the general one, for guinea pigs, lizards, ferrets, geckos and anything else that ended up needing a name.

Pet names that fit nearly any animal

  • PipOne short syllable that suits small animals and works as a nickname if the pet grows.
  • ButtonRound and soft, a natural for a rabbit, guinea pig or any small pet with a snub nose.
  • PuddingWarm and squishy-sounding, best on a rounder animal that spends its day in one spot.
  • PeanutThe classic small-pet name, with a crisp opening consonant that is easy to hear.
  • BeanTiny, neutral and easy to say in any voice. Good for a pet whose sex you do not know yet.
  • PickleA little funny, a little green, and it suits a gecko or a slightly grumpy cat.
  • MochiSoft and chewy, ideal for a white or cream animal with a very round face.
  • WobbleFor an older dog or a guinea pig with an unsteady, tottering walk.
  • Captain NoodleA title on a silly word is always funny, especially for a long, thin animal like a ferret or snake.
  • Duchess FluffingtonFits any long-haired pet that behaves as though the house was built for it.
  • Professor SnacksFor the pet that has worked out where the treats are kept and studies the cupboard all day.
  • Sir MeatballA polite title on a very round name, good for a dog with a tubby middle.
  • BellaPlain, pretty and universally understood; almost every vet has three Bellas on the books.
  • MiloWarm and quick to say, and it suits a pet with a cheerful face regardless of species.
  • SunnyGender-neutral and bright; suits a yellow bird, an orange cat or a cheerful golden retriever.
  • ScoutNeutral and active. Works on a curious animal that investigates everything you put down.
  • WillowA soft, flowing name that fits both fur and feathers, and easy to spell.
  • JuniperA woodsy name with a friendly rhythm, often shortened to June or Juni.
  • CloverSuits rabbits, guinea pigs and anything that spends time on grass.
  • ThistlePrickly-sounding but soft on the tongue, and it works for a hedgehog or a scruffy terrier.
  • EmberA warm orange-red name for a ginger cat, a red fox-type dog or a bearded dragon.
  • CordeliaA grand name that turns into Cordy in daily life, for a pet with dignity.
  • BarnabySounds like a butler, and the shortened Barney softens it for everyday use.
  • WinstonSturdy and stately, and it suits bulldogs, pugs and other jowly friends.
  • SterlingA neutral, shiny name for a gray or silver animal, and it feels expensive without effort.

Tips for choosing a pet name

  • Say it aloud a dozen times in the voice you will actually use. If it still sounds good when you are calling it half-asleep, keep it.
  • Think about how the name shortens. Most long names turn into a nickname within a week, so check that you like the short version.
  • Check the household. A name that sounds like a family member's name, or like a word you say often, will get confusing quickly.
  • If the animal's sex is not known yet, choose a neutral name now. Renaming a rabbit or a bird later is possible but awkward.
  • Wait a couple of days if you can. A pet's personality tends to appear quickly, and a name from watching it will suit better than one you brought with you.

Questions people ask

How do I choose a pet name?

Pick something short with a clear first sound, say it aloud in the voice you will use daily, and check how it shortens. If you can, spend a couple of days with the animal first, because habits and looks often suggest a name.

What are good unisex pet names?

Good gender-neutral pet names include Sunny, Scout, Sage, Pepper, Bean, Pip, Ziggy and Rio. Use the either button above to filter, since it shows names that carry no gender in everyday use.

What are cute pet names for small animals?

Names with soft sounds and round vowels suit small animals: Button, Pudding, Peanut, Pip, Bean and Mochi are common. Pick the Cute style above for more.

What are funny pet names?

Combine a title with a silly word: Captain Noodle, Duchess Fluffington, Professor Snacks or Sir Meatball. The joke works because the animal is oblivious. Choose the Funny style above for more.

Can I use a human name for a pet?

Yes, and it is very common. Old-fashioned names such as Walter, Gladys, Winston and Beatrice are especially popular for dogs, cats and small pets. Check that no relative or neighbor shares the name first.
