What a cocktail name has to do

A cocktail name is read on a menu before anyone tastes anything. In three seconds it has to tell a guest whether the drink is sharp or soft, light or heavy, serious or a laugh. That is why so many good names borrow from the same small toolkit: a time of day (Midnight), a texture (Velvet), a place (Coral Cove) or a plant (Rosemary). Those words carry flavor without saying it.

The classics were named by accident, by history, or by a bartender making a joke, and their names are now a shared vocabulary. Signature drinks should not compete with it. Calling a new gin drink a Last Word or an Old Fashioned confuses guests who order it expecting the classic. A better route is to name the drink for its ingredients or its story, and let a short line under the name do the explaining.

Keep the name short enough for a bartender to say fast on a Friday night. Two words is easy, three is fine, and a whole sentence is a menu problem. Puns are risky in the middle of a serious list but excellent on a party menu, where the joke is part of the fun.

Names for a party, a wedding or a home bar

Event cocktails work best when the name is a small piece of the event. A wedding signature drink can carry the couple's names or the venue, and a birthday cocktail can nod to the year the guest of honor was born. Playful names suit these settings because guests will say them aloud at the bar, and they act as a conversation starter.

At home, the naming is even freer. Name the drink after a room, a pet or an argument, and write it on a card with the recipe. The Playful chip gives puns for that mood, and Speakeasy gives names that sound like they belong on a printed list behind a bookcase door.

Naming your signature drink

  • Search the name before you print it. Many good names already belong to a classic or a well-known bar, and you want guests to order yours, not somebody else's.
  • Let the name hint at the flavor family: herb names for fresh drinks, metal and night words for stirred, spirit-heavy ones, island words for rum.
  • Keep it under about 20 characters if it goes on a printed menu. Long names crowd the line and force awkward line breaks.
  • Add a one-line description below the name. The name can be mysterious if the description plainly lists the spirit and the main flavors.
  • Say it to a bartender. If they hesitate or fumble the pronunciation, guests will too.
  • Do not use a brand of spirit or a bar's trademark as part of the name unless you have permission.

Questions people ask

How do I name a cocktail?

Start with the main flavor, the mood or a small story, then shorten it to two or three words. Test it on a menu line with a one-sentence description. Check that it does not clash with an established classic.

What are good names for signature cocktails?

Good signature cocktail names are short and evocative: Velvet Alibi, Coral Cove, Rosemary Fizz and Brass Whisper. They hint at flavor or mood without copying a classic like the Old Fashioned.

What are some funny cocktail names?

Funny cocktail names are usually puns: Gin and Bear It, Sip Happens, Bourbon Voyage and Rum With a View. They work best on casual or party menus where the joke sets the tone.

Can I name a cocktail after a person?

Yes, for a friend, a couple or a family member, as long as they agree. Use a first name or a nickname and a short role, such as Rosalind's Understudy, and avoid real celebrities.

Should the cocktail name include the spirit?

It helps if the spirit is the main flavor, as in Bourbon Voyage or Gin and Bear It. If the name is more abstract, put the base spirit in the menu description instead.
