How a pun name works

A pun name is a real-sounding name that says something else out loud. Justin Case is a first name and a last name until you say it fast and hear "just in case". That double read is the whole trick, and it depends on the listener getting the phrase a beat after the name, which is why pun names get a groan and a smile in the same second.

The best ones use a phrase that is common enough to be caught ("bill board", "pat pending", "gene pool") and split it so that each half also works as a normal name. Ben, Pat, Gene and Bill are all first names, so the joke hides in plain sight. The worst ones need explaining, or turn on a phrase nobody uses any more.

Puns for pets work on a different trick: you swap a syllable in a human name for a pet sound. Clawdia is Claudia with a claw, Woofgang is Wolfgang with a woof. Only the swapped syllable has to carry the joke, so keep the rest of the name intact.

Where pun names are useful

They are the classic choice for a joke character in a game, a fake name on a bar-quiz roster, a background name on a film set or a name tag at a party. Because they read as real names, they also work on a fictional email account or a character in a novel who needs a light touch.

They are less useful for anything serious. If the reader cannot get the pun, the name just looks odd, so save it for places where the joke is the point.

Pun names for pets

Pet puns are lower stakes. Nobody minds that your cat is called Purrcival, and the vet's receptionist gets a laugh each time. Pick a base name you would happily shout across a park, and put the pun in the first syllable. The Pets style also builds Sir and Lady titles with the -a-Lot pattern, which can be shouted just as well.

A shortlist of 20 pun names

  • Rick O'SheaAn Irish-sounding surname that turns out to be a ricochet.
  • Warren PeaceWarren is a real first name and the book title is instantly clear.
  • Chris P. BaconThe middle initial is the punchline, and the joke needs it to land.

  • Holly DaySimple, seasonal and the kind of name you would give a Christmas baby.
  • Sandy BeachTwo sunny words that sound like a lifeguard from a summer novel.
  • Ella VatorThe pun is in the last two syllables, which is why it works even when spoken quickly.

  • Clawdia PawsworthA cat's name: Claudia with a claw in it, and a surname that sounds like a manor.
  • WoofgangWolfgang with the wolf swapped for a woof. A one-word name for a dog with big ideas.
  • Sir Naps-a-LotA knightly title on a sleepy pet; the rhythm makes it easy to say.
  • Purrcival McPurrsonPercival gets a purr, and the surname gives the cat a family.

Picking a pun name that works

  • Make sure each half is a real name. Ben Thair works because Ben and Thair both pass as names; Bentair does not.
  • Say it aloud before you use it. A pun that is easy to read but hard to hear will fail at a party.
  • Use common phrases. A pun on a phrase that everybody knows is caught instantly; a rare phrase needs explaining.
  • For pets, put the pun in the front of the name, where it is heard first, and keep the rest ordinary so you can shout it.
  • Keep one pun per name. Two puns in the same name fight for the laugh, and only one wins.
