How to name a cow

A cow's name does two jobs. On a farm, every cow already has an ear tag with a number, and that is how the records work. The name is what people actually say, and it has to be quick, distinct from the other names in the barn, and pleasant enough to call for years. Pet cows, show heifers and sanctuary animals get the same treatment with more affection.

The traditional names are short and warm: Bessie, Daisy, Buttercup, Mabel, Hazel. They sound like a barn. Then there are the sweets, because dairy is already food: Latte, Caramel, Fudge, Butterscotch and Cream suit a brown or buff Jersey better than almost any human name. Holsteins are black and white, which invites Domino, Patches and Freckles. Highland cows with shaggy red coats are Ginger and Marmalade, and dark Angus cattle take Onyx or Tank.

Some farms name calves by a family system, giving a daughter a name that starts with the same letter as her mother or picks up the same theme, so a herd's history is readable at a glance. It is worth setting up before the first calf arrives, especially if you plan to keep the line going.

Cow names for bulls, steers, heifers and calves

A cow is technically a grown female that has calved. A heifer is a young female that has not, a bull is an intact male and a steer is a castrated male raised for beef or work. Calves can be named from day one. The vocabulary matters for naming because the traditions differ: cows and heifers get gentle names, bulls get strong ones, and steers, which are often calm and sociable, get anything from Tank to Biscuit.

The bulls and steers chip leans on weight and muscle, while the other four chips suit females and calves. Pet and sanctuary cattle often get human names and jokes because there is no herd book to satisfy. Use the first-letter filter if you have a herd that you want to name by initial.

Tips for naming a cow or a herd

  • Pick names that do not sound alike. A barn with Bessie, Betsy and Bettie will confuse everyone, including you.
  • Look at the coat for cues. Holstein patterns suggest Domino or Patches, Jersey shades suggest sweets and spices, and Highland fringes suggest Ginger or Marmalade.
  • Use a mother-and-daughter system if you breed: same first letter, or a shared word like Sweet Pea and Sweet Clover.
  • If you are naming animals for an FFA or 4-H project, choose something short that a child will happily call out at a show ring.
  • Name beef cattle whatever you like, but expect the decision to feel different when you have used the name for months.

Questions people ask

What are funny cow names?

Moo Shu, Moozart, Cowpernicus, Sir Loin and Udderly Awesome are favorites. Puns on moo, udder and beef work best when the name still sounds natural said aloud. Pick the joke that makes the farmer smile.

How do you name calves on a farm?
