Naming someone with a foot in two families

A half-elf's name is usually the first thing that tells you how they were raised. Brought up in an elven community, they get an Elvish given name and learn early that it marks them as not quite belonging. Raised by a human parent, they get something like Kellan or Isolde and spend decades watching their friends age. Either way the name is a choice someone made for them, and that's rich material for a character.

Most tabletop rules leave half-elf naming open: use an elf name, a human name, or both. The Blended style here does something in between. It takes a short human root (Mer, Tob, Cal, Wil) and finishes it with an Elvish ending (-ethil, -ielle, -andis), so you get names like Tobevar or Wilithra that sound as mixed as the character is.

The weakest half-elf names are the ones that ignore the heritage entirely. Giving a half-elf a generic human name is fine when it is deliberate, but pairing it with an Elvish surname, or the reverse, lets the name carry some of the backstory for you.

Half elf names and surnames

Surnames are where half-elves have the most room to play. A human family name like Ashford or Kendrick suggests a character raised among humans. An Elvish house such as Sianthil or Iliathal says the elven parent's family acknowledged them, which is not a given in every setting. The third option, a Common compound like Moonwater or Dawnfield, sounds like a name a family invented to split the difference, and that is exactly how the generator uses it.

Try the same given name with each kind of surname before you settle. Lirian Hallam and Lirian Sianthil are the same person raised in two different houses.

Half elf names and the stories they suggest

  • Tobevar AshwhisperA plain human root with an Elvish ending; the parents clearly compromised.
  • WilithraStarts like Wilhelmina and ends like an elf queen, which is the half-elf experience in one word.
  • Lirian HallamElvish first name, sturdy human surname; suggests an elven mother and a human father's village.
  • Isolde MoonwaterA human name with a half-invented surname, good for a bard with a mixed-heritage stage name.
  • Caelondir DunmoreA long, formal Elvish name dragged down to earth by a Scottish-sounding surname.
  • Meraya ThornfieldSounds right in both a human city and an elven glade; useful for a diplomat.
  • Kellan StarlingA human-leaning name with a bird surname that hints at the elven side.
  • Raewyn VanceShort Elvish given name, short human surname; clean and easy to say at the table.
  • CalanorA blended name that could pass as either, ideal for a half-elf who doesn't advertise heritage.
  • Seren BrightwaterSeren means star in Welsh, so the human name already has an Elvish feel.
  • Rodethil SunmereThe blunt Rod- root undercuts the ethereal ending, which suits a gruff half-elf fighter.
  • Taeren OlovethFully Elvish; the right pick for a half-elf raised entirely among elves.
  • Jessamy PenroseOld English and Cornish sounds with no elven trace at all, for a character hiding their ears.
  • HalandisA single blended name for a half-elf who has dropped the surname, and probably the family.
  • Gideon ThornfieldA human name that feels grounded and dependable, next to a surname with a hint of wildness.
  • Brenielle GlenmoorThe -ielle ending softens a sharp human start; a good fit for a cleric or healer.
  • Aeris KendrickNeutral Elvish given name and a practical human surname; works for any class.
  • LorandisFlowing but short; a name an elf parent would pick to help a child fit in on both sides.
  • Nessa SilverbrookA short human name and a pretty compound surname, good for a sorcerer.
  • Faelethil RookwoodA soft formal name with a dark human surname; the family history is doing work here.
  • Rosaya StarlingThe Ros- root is familiar to humans; the -aya ending gives away the elven half.

How to pick a half elf name that fits

  • Decide which parent named the character. That one answer picks your style chip and a good chunk of backstory.
  • Mix and match: an Elvish given name with a human surname, or the other way round, shows the heritage clearly.
  • Try a nickname. Half-elves with long Elvish names often get shortened by human friends (Caelondir becomes Cael), and that difference can come up in play.
  • Avoid giving your half-elf the same naming style as the party's full elf. The contrast is part of the character.
  • If the character is hiding their heritage, pick a fully human name and let the Elvish name come out later as a reveal.

Questions people ask

What are good half elf names?

Good half elf names reflect mixed heritage. You can use an Elvish name like Lirian or Raewyn, a human name like Kellan or Isolde, or a blend such as Tobevar or Wilithra that pairs a human root with an Elvish ending. Add a human or Elvish surname to show which family raised them.

Do half elves use elf names or human names?

Either. Most settings let half-elves take the naming customs of whichever culture raised them, and many carry one of each. Choosing is part of building the character: an Elvish name suggests an elven upbringing, a human name suggests a human one.

Do half elves have last names?

Usually. A half-elf raised by humans typically has a human family name, while one acknowledged by an elven family may carry an Elvish house name. Some use an invented Common surname such as Moonwater or Dawnfield.

What is a blended half elf name?

A blended name mixes both heritages in a single word, usually a short human root plus an Elvish ending: Mer plus -ithra gives Merithra, Cal plus -anor gives Calanor. The Blended style above builds these automatically.
