A half-orc's name shows who raised them

Half-orc names come in two registers, and which one a character uses is a statement about childhood. A half-orc raised in a town gets an ordinary human name, often chosen by a mother or an adoptive family who wanted the child to be accepted: Garrett, Hedda, Silas Marsh. One raised in the warband gets a hard, short orc name with no soft edges: Thrak, Zora, Gorm. Everything interesting about the character happens in the space between.

The mixed name is where half-orcs are best. A human first name with an orc nickname (Emmett "Tusk" Hollis) says the character lives in a human world but was marked by the other one. An orc first name with a human trade surname (Dorg Tanner) says somebody adopted him and gave him a trade. Neither sounds like a full orc, and neither sounds like a full human, which is the whole point of the race.

Sound matters, but less than the gap. Give a half-orc an orc name that has been softened (Zora in place of Zuraga, Bek in place of Bekgul) or a human name with a hard consonant in it, and readers will feel the mix without being told.

Choosing between the three styles

Human-raised suits the character who has spent their life proving they belong. Orc-raised suits the one who has been sent out of the clan, or came to the human world by choice. The third style, both worlds, is the easiest to roleplay because the nickname does the work: it is the first thing other characters ask about.

Half orc names work for a hero as easily as a villain. Pick a name with a story attached and the world will follow: a nickname like Half-Moon, a trade surname like Thatcher, or an epithet like Splitroad tell the table that this character has a history on both sides of a border.

A shortlist of 22 half orc names

  • Garrett MarshPlain and human, which is precisely the point for a half-orc who has tried to fit in for years.
  • Hedda TannerA trade surname suggests an adoptive family that taught her leatherwork before she learned to fight.
  • Silas CarterA gentle first name and a working surname; the tusks are the only thing he can't disguise.
  • Bram "Boulder" HollisThe nickname is what the town calls him, and the character has stopped arguing.
  • Maren "Scar" WardA human first name with a nickname she earned, which the family did not choose for her.
  • ThrakShort and orcish, no apology. The kind of name given by a mother in a warband.
  • ZoraSofter than most orc names, which makes it work for a half-orc who is trying to be understood.
  • Gorm AshfordAn orc first name with a human surname says the character was taken in by a family in town.
  • Grisha FletcherA female orc name with a trade surname; the name of somebody who learned bowmaking in a human town.
  • Dorg TannerSounds like a big-boned guard who was adopted by a leatherworker, and is very good at his job.
  • Rukka TuskbornThe epithet says what she is; it is a proud name for an orc-raised half-orc.
  • Mogg HalfbloodBlunt and self-aware. Some half-orcs would take the label and wear it, and this is one.
  • YornNeutral and short, which is how the character chooses to be addressed.
  • Kesh SplitroadThe epithet suggests someone who has had to pick a direction at every fork.
  • Wendel "Ox" BarrowA pleasant first name and a heavy nickname; a character built like a barrel.
  • Ursa CraneUrsa nods to a bear, and Crane is a fragile surname for a woman who is not.
  • Roan MercerA human name with no hint of orc, useful for a character who hides what he is.
  • BoskA single hard syllable that sounds like a fist on a table.
  • Petra "Grit" WheelerA determined nickname on a plain name. She will not give up a job once she takes it.
  • Haz ThatcherShort orc name with a rural surname, ideal for a farmhand turned adventurer.
  • Skarn LongfangThe epithet is a reminder of the orc side, and the name is easy to say aloud.
  • Odila StroudElegant and slightly old-fashioned, the sort of name a half-orc scholar would choose.

Naming a half-orc character

  • Decide who raised the character before you choose the name. A name from the wrong side of the family will contradict the backstory you write later.
  • Give a half-orc a nickname only if it has an origin. "Tusk" because of the tusks is fine; "Tusk" because a bandit once bit him is a story.
  • Use the surname to show trade or place. Tanner, Cooper and Mercer all say what the adoptive family did.
  • Do not name your half-orc after a franchise character. Half-orc heroes are common in the genre, and a familiar name stops being a character.
  • Say the whole name out loud. A hard orc first name with a long human surname can be a mouthful, and it is worth trimming.

Questions people ask

What are good half-orc names?

Good half-orc names blend both sides: a human first name with a nickname, such as Bram "Boulder" Hollis, or a short orc name with a human trade surname, such as Dorg Tanner. Which side leads depends on who raised the character.

Do half-orcs use orc or human names?

Both, depending on upbringing. Half-orcs raised in human communities usually have human names, those raised by orcs have orc names, and many carry a mix, such as a human first name with an orc-style epithet.

How do I name a female half-orc?

Use a human female name such as Hedda, Maren or Petra if she grew up among humans, or an orc name such as Grisha or Ursa if she was raised in a clan. A nickname such as Scar or Grit works with either.

What last names fit a half-orc?

Trade and place surnames such as Tanner, Cooper, Ashford or Marsh fit half-orcs raised by humans, while epithets like Tuskborn or Halfblood suit those with orc roots. The generator uses both.

How is a half-orc name different from an orc name?

A pure orc name is short and hard with a clan or war name. A half-orc name is more varied, since it can be human, orcish or both, and it often includes a nickname or a trade surname that reflects the character's mixed upbringing.
