What makes a name sound orcish

Orc names are built to be shouted. They take short syllables, stack hard consonants at the front and back, and rarely bother with soft vowels in the middle: Grosh, Ruk, Thokmar, Draka. A useful test is to imagine the name called across a burning field. If it still carries, it is orcish. If it needs a second breath, it is an elf's.

The sounds that matter are g, k, r, z, sh and th, with a lot of u and o for vowels. A single vowel between two hard consonants (Zug, Mak, Krag) makes the shortest names. A trailing consonant cluster (-gul, -nak, -dush) makes the heavier ones. Female names usually end on an open vowel or a soft sh (Ruka, Dranga, Vosha), which is a way of keeping the same rough texture without copying the men's endings.

What makes a good orc character is that the name is not the whole story. Fantasy has spent decades treating orcs as scenery, and a name like Grosh Bonecleaver does not need to change that, but it helps to give an orc a clan or a war name with a history behind it. The name suggests somebody who has done something; the character sheet should say what.

Clans and war names

Orcs in most settings do not carry family surnames in the human sense. They carry a clan, which is a fighting community, and often a war name, which is a title earned in battle. This page offers both. "Of Clan Redtusk" tells you where an orc stands; "Skullsplitter" tells you what they have done.

Orc names for women follow the same rules. A female orc chief is a chief first, so she gets the same war names as the men, and the clan is the same. The only real difference is the given name ending.

The best orc names we could come up with (22)

  • GroshOne syllable, three hard sounds. This is what an orc name sounds like at its shortest.
  • ThokmarThe k and m give it a drumbeat rhythm, and it sounds like a captain rather than a scout.
  • RukThree letters, and no one will mispronounce it. Good for a quick-tempered lieutenant.
  • ZugAlmost comically compact. Works for a lovable cook or a side character players will keep.
  • DrakaOpen vowel ending marks a woman's name while keeping the hard opening consonants.
  • VoshaThe soft sh makes it sound fast and sharp, like a knife being drawn.
  • Gruka of Clan RedtuskA female name with the clan attached, which tells the table who she answers to.
  • UshakThe unusual vowel start gives a name that is orcish without being generic.
  • MogashTwo syllables and an ash ending: a mid-rank warrior with something to prove.
  • Hrok SkullsplitterA short name plus a blunt title, the classic war-name shape.
  • Narg ManyscarsA war name that reads as a joke and a threat at once, and it is exactly how a veteran brags.
  • Brakla StonegrinderSuggests an orc who broke down fortifications, or one who runs the mill.
  • Kesh LoudmouthA name given for a habit, not a deed. Every warband has one.
  • Odg of Clan BonedrumThe clan name suggests a war-drum tradition, and the odd spelling of Odg feels less generic.
  • LugbulTwo rounded syllables that make a heavy, slow name: a big orc who does not need speed.
  • YorgNeutral, short and easy to write on a character sheet.
  • Zarnak IronhideA name and a nickname, so the character earns reputation before the first fight.
  • Ghul TuskbreakerSounds like a boar hunter who moved on to bigger game.
  • NagushFemale name with a sh ending; strong enough for a war-chief.
  • Snag MudstomperA scrappy, low-status name, perfect for a scout who is smarter than he looks.
  • MashotThe ot ending is unusual and breaks up the g and k sound; useful for variety in a group of orcs.
  • Krul of Clan EmberjawShort and grim, with a clan name that hints at fire-breathing beasts in the history.

Choosing an orc name

  • Keep it to one or two syllables. Orc names are short by design, and a longer one sounds like an elf or a dwarf.
  • Give every orc in the same warband a different first letter. Grosh, Gruk and Gor look the same on a page and sound the same at the table.
  • Pick a war name that says something specific. Skullsplitter is generic; Ramshoulder tells you the orc charged a gate.
  • Make one orc's name soft. A gentle-sounding orc (Ushak, Vosha) in a group of Zugs and Kraks is a character before they speak.
  • If your orc has left the clan, drop the clan name and keep the war name. That is what a wanderer would keep.

Questions people ask

What are good orc names?

Good orc names are short and hard: Grosh, Thokmar, Ruk and Zug for men, Draka, Vosha and Nagush for women. Add a clan such as Redtusk or a war name such as Skullsplitter for a name with a history.

How do you make an orc name?

Start with one or two syllables of hard consonants: g, k, r, z, th, sh. Use u or o as the vowel, close the name on a consonant, and you have a male name. For a female name, end on a vowel such as -a or -sha.

Do orcs have last names?

Usually not in the human sense. Orcs in most settings are identified by a clan, such as Clan Redtusk, and often by a war name earned in battle, such as Bonecleaver. Either can serve as a surname if you need one.

What are some female orc names?

Draka, Vosha, Gruka, Nagush, Moraka and Uzrala all work. Female orc names often keep hard opening consonants and finish on an open vowel or a sh sound, which sets them apart from the men's names without softening them.

Are these orc names from Warcraft or Lord of the Rings?

No. They come from syllable lists and word banks written for this site. Any name that matches a published character is a coincidence of common sounds, not a copy; the clan and war-name banks use ordinary words.
