Why snake names are different from dog names

A snake will never come when you call it. It does not learn its name the way a dog or even a rabbit does, so the name is mostly for you, your family and the vet's file. That frees you up. You can pick something that sounds good on a terrarium label and better when you introduce the animal to friends, which is where most snake names get their real use.

The best ones lean on the animal itself. Long and thin points to noodles, pasta and licorice. Patterned scales point to ribbons, marble and stained glass. Dark, glossy morphs get names like Onyx and Sable, while a pale banana ball python is practically begging for Butter or Mango. A species can steer you too: a corn snake looks like autumn, a king snake wears bands like a barber pole, and a green tree python gives you every leaf and gem name you can think of.

What goes wrong is trying too hard. Puns built on "hiss" and "sss" are fun once, but a name you have to say every day for fifteen or twenty years should survive being said flatly. Test it by imagining the phrase "Say hello to ..." in front of a class of nine-year-olds.

Cute, fierce, mythic or funny

The four style chips above sort the list by attitude. Cute leans on food and small round words, which suits a docile corn snake or ball python that spends most of its life curled in a hide. Fierce goes for venom, shadow and blades, and works even better as an ironic joke on a gentle pet. Mythic pulls from serpent lore around the world, from the Egyptian foe of the sun to the Norse serpent circling the earth, and hover text shows what each one refers to.

Funny is the pun pile. If you want snake names for a classroom pet or a kid's first reptile, this is usually the list that gets voted for. Use the first-letter filter to narrow things down, or mix a title onto a soft name, like Professor Pretzel, for a pet with a personality.

24 snake names and the reasoning behind each

  • NoodleSays what the animal looks like, is friendly to say, and every child in the room gets it at once.
  • PretzelPerfect for a coiled ball python, since the resting pose is a knot.
  • OnyxGlossy black scales deserve a gem name, and the short hard x sounds sleek.
  • SableA dark, warm name that suits a black rat snake or a chocolate morph.
  • MangoA banana or yellow-toned ball python looks like fruit, so borrow the fruit bowl.
  • RibbonWorks for a slim garter snake with stripes running down its body.
  • CloverGreen tree pythons and smooth green snakes are leaf-colored, and Clover is easy on the ear.
  • EmberCorn snakes in red and orange morphs look like a banked fire.
  • MambaPunchy two-syllable name borrowed from a real species, ironic on a harmless pet.
  • VesperEvening in Latin. A good pick for a nocturnal snake that comes alive after lights out.
  • ApophisEgyptian serpent that swallows the sun each night. Grand enough for a big python.
  • JormungandrThe Norse world serpent. Long to say, so it usually shrinks to Jorm, which is charming.
  • OuroborosThe snake eating its own tail. Ideal for a snake that curls into a perfect ring.
  • WadjetEgyptian cobra goddess and guardian of kings. Strong pick for a female snake.
  • MedusaSnake-haired and famous, which makes it an easy joke and an easy remember.
  • Danger NoodleInternet nickname for snakes that fits a small, harmless one very well.
  • SnakespeareA bookish pun for a household that reads. Short enough to stick.
  • Hissy FitSuits a snake with a temper, and the joke lands with all ages.
  • Professor PretzelA title on a snack name creates a character. It sounds like it teaches a class.
  • SlateGray, calm and hard to mishear, good for a gray banded king snake.
  • FettuccineA long pasta name for a long snake. Nicknames itself Fetty within a week.
  • BasiliskMythical king of serpents, a bit ambitious for a hatchling but it will grow into it.
  • DumplingRound, soft and slightly silly. A great match for a chubby royal python.
  • ThornShort, sharp and a little dangerous, fitting a rough-scaled hognose or a spiky-looking morph.

Picking a name that lasts as long as your snake

  • Look at the colors first. Pastel, banana, piebald and albino morphs each have an obvious food or flower name waiting; dark morphs lean toward gems and shadows.
  • Say it in the vet's waiting room voice. If you cringe when the receptionist calls it out, drop the pun.
  • Snakes live a long time, often well over a decade for common pet species, so choose something that still fits when you are older and the joke has aged.
  • Keep it to two syllables if you can. It makes labels, enclosure tags and social media handles shorter.
  • Skip names of famous fictional snakes. They date quickly and you will explain the reference for years.
  • If you are stuck between two, pick the one you would be happy to shout across a reptile expo.

Questions people ask

What are good names for a snake?

Food names like Noodle, Pretzel and Mango suit gentle snakes, while Onyx, Viper and Sable suit dark or sleek ones. Mythic names such as Apophis and Wadjet work well for large pythons. Pick from the style that matches your snake's personality.

Do snakes know their names?

No. Snakes recognize the smell and handling of a person, but they do not learn spoken names. The name is for you and the people around you, so choose one that sounds good rather than one your snake can learn.

What are cool names for a black snake?

Onyx, Sable, Shade, Slate, Raven and Midnight all suit a dark snake. For a lighter tone, Ash or Cinder give a smoky feel. Mythic picks like Nidhogg work if the snake is large.

What are funny snake names?

Danger Noodle, Nope Rope, Hissy Fit and Sir Hiss-a-Lot are common favorites. Puns on Shakespeare, Slinky and pasta also work. Choose one that still sounds fine when said without the joke voice.

How do I name a male or female snake?

Most snake names are unisex, so you rarely need to choose by sex, and young snakes are often hard to sex anyway. Use titles like Lord or Lady for a gendered feel, or pick a name that fits the color and pattern instead.
